Clinical Experience

  • Our residency is unique in that we are a bicampus program that staffs two world-class hospitals, that each have distinct local environments that afford a great breadth to our training. This provides our residents with an immense range of clinical experiences that prepares them for any practice environment upon graduation.

Our high-acuity, high-volume centers afford unparalleled clinical experiences, and offer a broad range of complex pathology. Our residents become experts in management of routine EM complaints as well as highly-complex, specialized care.

Our hospitals are associated with two Ivy-league institutions and are home to renowned faculty. If you have a specific interest within EM, chances are you can find a faculty mentor at one of the two campuses who shares that interest and has specialized training in that field. Combined with the structure afforded by the Academic Practice Tracks, our residents are able to carve out an academic niche that sets them apart and sets them up for success in their career following residency.

  • We work very closely with our consulting services, and have admitting privileges at both campuses. Communication with both is very collegial, and you’ll find yourself making friends with people from other services as you each rotate through the hospital.

Additionally, we benefit from excellent education from our consultants as some of them are the world experts in various disease pathologies and treatments.

  • We primarily staff the NYP-Columbia University Medical Center (W 168th St.) and NYP-Weill Cornell Medical Center (E 68th St.) Adult Emergency Departments.

Our pediatric curriculum takes place at the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital and the NYP-Weill Cornell Medical Center Pediatric Emergency Department.

Elective and moonlighting opportunities are available at several affiliate community sites (e.g. NYP-Allen Hospital, NYP-Westchester, NYP-Lower Manhattan Hospital) as well.

  • Cornell is a Level 1 Trauma Center, and trauma activations are co-managed with the trauma surgery team. Leadership of individual traumas alternates between trauma surgery and EM. The policy for trauma airways is to alternate between the EM and anesthesia teams, but in practice, they are typically managed by the EM resident.

Columbia is a Level 2 Trauma Center, but receives a fair number of "walk-in" traumas. The EM team primarily manages any traumatic injuries at CUMC, with the surgical team available as a consult service. Since it’s a level 2 center, trauma surgery is not in the same building and will not reach the trauma room until the resuscitation is well underway.

  • Yes, we have admitting privileges at both campuses.

  • We use Epic EMR, including access to dictation, customizable macros and customizable dot phrases.

Scheduling

  • Our annual schedules are organized into 13 four-week blocks. The operations chiefs are responsible for creating the day-to-day schedules for the Emergency Department blocks. We do not use a templated schedule, so there is a great deal of flexibility for residents.

  • The annual schedule is released in the Spring prior to each academic year.

Monthly block schedules are released approximately 4-6 weeks prior to the start of an ED block.

  • Schedule requests may be made for each EM block. Since we do not use a templated schedule, there is significant flexibility. Once schedules are posted, residents can trade shifts amongst each other fairly easily.

  • Residents get 4 weeks of vacation per year, split into two 2-week vacation blocks.

Resident requests are taken into account for scheduling vacation blocks.

  • For EM Blocks:
    PGY1: 18 shifts; 12 hours each
    PGY2: 17 shifts; 12 hours each
    PGY3: 18 shifts; 8 hours*
    PGY4: 17 shifts; 8 hours*
    *except Wednesday night and weekends
