Resident Life

There’s no place like NYC. No matter what you’re into—whether it’s food, theater, concerts, sports, nightlife, art, etc—there’s something for everyone.

Our residency is a tight-knit group. You can find our residents grabbing brunch with the nurses and ER techs on the UES after a Cornell night shift, or meeting up in the Heights to unwind after a busy day at Columbia. We are on a first-name basis with many of our faculty members and our leadership, and often they will join us at social events.

Life in NYC

  • Manhattan is definitely an expensive place to live. Luckily, at NYP we are paid more than the vast majority of other residencies in the country and region. The salary helps offset some of the cost of living. On top of our salary, NYP provides a $7500 housing stipend per year. In addition, we get Lyft credits ($2000/year), a food stipend ($180/month), and a variety of other optional benefits. NYP offers subsidized housing as well, which provides a more affordable alternative to a standard NYC apartment.

  • Our residents live all over the city. Many of us live in NYP housing, either by the Cornell campus or Columbia campus.

Others are scattered around the city, including in Murray Hill, Hell's Kitchen, Columbus Circle, the UWS, Harlem, and Lower Manhattan.

A few of our residents choose to live outside of Manhattan. Living outside of Manhattan can offer a significantly lower cost of living, but may extend your commute. In the past few years, we have had residents live in New Jersey, City Island, and Brooklyn.

  • It is very easy to get around Manhattan, and you do not need a car.

There is an intercampus shuttle that goes between Cornell and Columbia on weekdays every hour. Many of our residents use the shuttle to get to and from work if they live near one of the campuses.

If you can't use the shuttle, the subway is an easy and affordable option. You can get to Columbia via the A, C, or 1 train, and Cornell is just off the Q and 6. The MTA bus system is also used by many of our residents.

If a shift ends late, or we're not feeling public transportation, we have $2000 of Lyft credit to use for work-related commutes.

If you do choose to have a car, parking is available for a fee at both campuses.
