The Elective Request Form must be submitted 60 days prior to the start date for home electives, and 120 days prior to the start date for away electives.
Please note that this is neither an exhaustive nor official list. This list has been compiled based on electives done by prior residents. The listed contacts are faculty members who have been a point of contact for the elective in the past.

Toxicology
Objectives: residents will work closely with Toxicology faculty to develop a deeper understanding of the nuances in the management of acute toxicologic conditions. Clinical experiences include holding the Tox pager and responding to consults.

Sports Medicine
Objectives: residents will work with Sports Med faculty in the clinical setting to diagnose and manage nonemergent musculoskeletal injuries.

Orthopedics
Objectives: residents will rotate with the ortho consult service to improve their evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of acute orthopedic injuries including fractures and dislocations. Residents will work with the orthopedics consults team and assist with closed fracture reductions, splinting, casting, joint aspirations, and other acute interventions.

Surgical ICU
Objectives: residents will rotate through the surgical ICU to gain exposure to critical care and perioperative management. Residents will function in a senior resident role and will supervise interns from various services.

Cardiothoracic ICU
Objectives: residents will rotate through the cardiothoracic ICU to gain exposure to critical care, perioperative management, mechanical circulatory support (VADs, ECMO), and transplant medicine. Residents will function as the primary resident for 3-5 patients.

Cardiac ICU (CCU)
Objectives: residents will rotate through the CCU and/or CTICU at Cornell to learn about management of cardiac critical care (including cardiogenic shock, mechanical circulatory support, VA-ECMO, and perioperative management of cardiac surgery patients).

Advanced Ultrasound
Objectives: this rotation is designed to allow residents to become familiar with advanced ultrasound skills. During this rotation, you will participate in QA of your images based on the following metrics: 1) technically adequate EUS images, 2) US study interpretation, 3) PBL and improvement.

Procedural Ultrasound
Objectives: residents will learn to perform fundamental EM procedures with ultrasound guidance, such as peripheral nerve blocks. Residents will curate a presentation for ultrasound conference on developing practices within procedural ultrasound.

Interventional Pulmonology
Objectives: residents will obtain experience with interventional pulmonology procedures such as bronchoscopy and surgical airways and gain clinical experience in procedural sedation and analgesia

Interventional Radiology
Objectives: the goal of the IR elective rotation is for the rotating resident to develop an understanding of the scope and breadth of interventional radiology. By the end of the 2 or 4- week dedicated vascular and interventional radiology block, the rotating resident will have a basic proficiency in the pre and post procedural care of interventional radiology patients, as well as the ability to assist in the performance of core vascular and interventional procedures.

Lower Manhattan Hospital Community EM
Objectives: residents will gain exposure to practicing Emergency Medicine in a community setting. By the end of this rotations, residents should be able to recognize the limitations of community sites, understand when transfer to a tertiary care center is necessary, and gain experience practicing in an environment where consultants and specialists are not always readily available.
Location: NYP-Lower Manhattan Hospital

Westchester Hospital Community EM

Global EM: Weill Bugando (Tanzania)
Objective: residents will participate in bedside care, help advise/teach staff in direct patient care, and learn about international medicine and practicing in a different medical system.

ED Administration
Objectives: residents will gain exposure to different aspects of the Emergency Department Leadership Team including operations, quality, innovations, and technology with specific focus in learning more about administrative fellowship after residency.
Residents will attend operations meetings, and assist in developing and implementing solutions and optimizing ED care.
